The primary column consists of an ion source (Duoplasmatron or Cessium Gun), source steering, matching lens, transfer lens, wien magnet, and wein electrostatic steering. The oxygen bottle under the table is used by the Duo to maintain a steady plasma.

When in use, a plastic cover prevents personnel from touching the +10KV column.
