Samples mounted on the stage (left) are moved into position by observing the surface of the sample through the port on top of the secondary column with a 20x CCTV system. The ion beam from the primary column (right) impacts the sample at a 45 degree angle, ions released by primary beam are accelerated down the secondary column and through the instrument for analysis.
